Introducing our Pilot Cohort

About the fellowship

The Ruidosos Fellowship is a program designed to train emerging communicators who want to use creative communications and digital strategies to build people power and win the change the Rio Grande Valley needs. During the program, fellows are paired with a local host organization to work on a digital project that supports their mission and have the opportunity to learn from experienced trainers and receive mentorship to complete their campaigns. The aim of this program is to invest in local talent and accelerate their learning to fill gaps in local organizations.

The Ruidosos fellowship launched in November of 2023 and is ongoing until September 2024. The fellows, Ruby Fuentes and Valerie Hernandez, kickstarted the pilot cohort with our two-week Academy where the fellows prepared for and worked on crafting digital campaign plans to implement with their host organizations. Our inaugural host organizations are Frontera Fund and The Sidewalk School for Children Asylum-Seekers.

Frontera Fund fosters reproductive justice and rights by supporting community advocacy and direct services for all people of the Rio Grande Valley regardless of gender identity, ability, sexual orientation, race, class, immigration status, age, or religious affiliation. They envision a culture in the Rio Grande Valley that supports people of all faiths and political leanings to make reproductive decisions without shame or stigma. They see a Rio Grande Valley that has overcome the trauma of a militarized border and has gained reproductive liberation.

The Sidewalk School is a minority led and operated rapid response organization fighting for equity and safety for asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border by working to holistically meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable. They work alongside asylum seekers to empower, advocate and influence policy that advances the rights of those seeking protection. The Sidewalk School has been in 9 cities across Mexico to serve Children Asylum Seekers as they await their U.S trials or their turn to file for U.S. asylum.
